What is Porcelanosa?

Porcelanosa makes porcelain and ceramic tile in Vila-real, Spain: stone and marble looks, wood-look planks and its large-format porcelain.

The big pieces are the ones to see in person. They run as large as about 126 by 63 inches, so one panel can cover a shower wall or a kitchen backsplash with no grout lines.

Choosing Porcelanosa

Where can you see Porcelanosa in Sarasota?

At Oracle Flooring & Design, 1175 N Washington Blvd, Sarasota, FL 34236, open Monday to Saturday with no appointment needed.

Our showroom has a Porcelanosa corner where the large panels stand at full size, next to the floors, walls and fixtures they go with.

We help you choose, we order it for you, and certified installers who work with us regularly put it in. Big panels are heavy and need a flat wall and a steady team, so we plan the layout before anything is cut.

What else does the Porcelanosa group make?

Porcelanosa is one of seven companies in one group, each with its own line:

  • Porcelanosa: porcelain and ceramic floor and wall tile, its large-format porcelain included.
  • L'Antic Colonial: natural stone and wood, small ceramic tiles and mosaics, and laminate and vinyl floors.
  • Noken: bathroom furniture, faucets, toilets and sinks, tubs, shower trays and heated towel rails.
  • Gamadecor: furniture and fittings for the home, kitchens and bathrooms among them.
  • XTONE: large-format surfaces in porcelain and natural stone.
  • Krion: a solid surface material.
  • Butech: what goes under and around the tile, from adhesives and grout to trims and shower trays, and thick porcelain for outdoor floors.

How big do the panels get?

In the US, Porcelanosa's large-format porcelain comes in pieces of about 63 by 126 inches, so one covers a shower wall or a kitchen backsplash with no grout lines at all. The big pieces come in three thicknesses, from about a quarter inch for walls to about three quarters of an inch for floors outside.

Its XLight porcelain is extra slim, made to cover walls and even furniture: in a kitchen it can run from the backsplash to the cabinet fronts and the countertop.

How are the big panels installed?

With a plan. A panel that size needs a very flat wall or floor, so the surface is checked and leveled first, and the layout is drawn before anything is cut, so the joints land where they should. The pieces are heavy, so they take two people and the right tools, and in a condo the elevator and the hallways get measured before anything is ordered.

How do you look after it?

Like any porcelain: sweep or vacuum up the sand, then damp-mop with a mild cleaner made for tile, and skip oil soaps and waxes, which leave a film. Glazed porcelain never needs sealing.

Can Porcelanosa go outside?

Yes, in porcelain made for outdoors, with a finish that grips when it's wet around a pool. For terraces and pool decks there's also porcelain about three quarters of an inch thick that can sit on gravel, sand or grass, or on a raised floor that lets the rain drain through its joints. The floor inside can carry straight on outside.

Questions we hear

Is Porcelanosa porcelain or ceramic?

Both. Its porcelain is the dense, hard kind that barely takes in water, for floors, showers, the big panels and outdoors; its ceramic tile goes on walls. We'll show you which is which in the showroom.

Where is Porcelanosa made?

In Spain: Porcelanosa designs and makes its tile in Vila-real, in the province of Castellón, and exports it from there.

Does Porcelanosa make wood-look tile?

Yes. Its wood-look porcelain planks carry the grain of real wood, and sand, water and pets don't bother them, so they suit a living room, a bathroom or a lanai. Some of its outdoor porcelain comes in wood looks too.

Can I order Porcelanosa through Oracle?

Yes. We're an Exclusive Porcelanosa Authorized Dealer, listed on Porcelanosa's US dealer map: we help you choose, order it for you, and certified installers who work with us regularly put it in.

How big is Porcelanosa around the world?

Porcelanosa sells through more than 1,200 points of sale on five continents, and it keeps opening more: over twenty new and refurbished showrooms in one year, from Atlanta, Houston and Charlotte to Marbella, Verona and Aix-en-Provence.

Its flagship is on Fifth Avenue in New York, in the Commodore Criterion, a landmark building that Foster + Partners restored for it: about 13,000 square feet of showroom, with a gallery of XTONE slabs, a whole apartment fitted out in the group's materials and a floor of bathrooms.

Architects and designers work with it around the world. Foster + Partners chose the group's Krion for the bathrooms of offices in Shanghai; the group shows what's new from its seven companies at its own International Exhibition of Global Architecture and Interior Design, now in its 32nd edition; and its architecture and interior design awards have honored Pritzker Prize winner Alejandro Aravena.

Here in Sarasota, you'll find it in our showroom's Porcelanosa corner.
